Monk Gyatso:
There are not as direct lessons in this chapter as there are
explorations of themes.
The Virtue of Friendship: We see how friends are loyal (the loyal
priest), we see how friends don’t leave their friends behind (Katara and Sokka
won’t leave the crumbling temple without Aang), and that friendship comforts us
(the ending when Katara and Sokka comfort Aang).
Emotions can Cloud your Judgment: Although Zuko eventually
gets away; he put himself and his crew in danger chasing the avatar, and was
lucky to get away.
Great Ideas and Teamwork: Sokka is a very valuable member of
the team. Sometimes this is not always
clear, as he is also used often as the funny, grumpy guy. But here we have an example of his great
ingenuity with his smart plan to get the door open. Even though it doesn’t work, Katara has one
as well. Good teams build on one
another’s ideas and strengths. It
doesn’t matter exactly who comes up with which part of the plan, good teamwork
is about the TEAM succeeding in their goals.
Here there is no comparing or jealousy, just inventiveness and
persistence. What great examples!
