110: Jet

Monk Gyatso:
This chapter has a lesson we need to carefully consider: Ideas and feelings that begin with righteous feelings CAN grow into actions that are wrong, if we justify our wickedness.  Jet, in fighting against an attacking Fire Nation, loses sight of what is a right or a wrong action because he is so focused on revenge.  Like him, we don’t need to allow our enemies to trample over us, but he allows his anger and vengeance to poison his otherwise good heart.  This can happen to us if we are not careful.  We need to reflect on our actions and be honest with ourselves about what is truly righteous.

The second great lesson from this chapter is how our feelings can cloud our clear thinking.  Katara thinks Jet is great, and is distracted by his good looks and hero style, so that she won’t listen when others see what is really going on.  Many times people have been willing to do things they shouldn’t when someone they like tries to convince them that it is okay.  Be careful to never let beauty lead you down a wrong path.

Both of these lessons show us that we need to step back and take reflection of our actions and others.  What are we doing and where are our friends leading us?  We have time each week on Sundays during the sacrament to think about how we are acting and what we are doing.  We have scriptures to ponder and help us know what is right, they can help clear the confusion that emotions can bring.  We have good friends, family, and trusted people to help us make right choices.  And ultimately we have God, to whom we can turn to in prayer, and seek answers to our questions.

Panzerfaust (boy 10)– Jet was too focused on one thing, and didn’t care about what his actions might do to others.  He got too focused on fighting the fire nation.
Like on “UP”, the old man got too focused on getting the bird and then he killed those other explorers.  Although they didn’t start out as bad, they got too focused on what they were doing and that led to bad things.

Pirate Capn (boy 8)– Jet didn’t respect that everyone isn’t part of the war.  That old man, just because he is part of the fire nation, doesn’t mean he wanted all the things the army had done.
He kept telling Katara to “stop and think about it” and that is exactly what he needed to do: ‘stop and think’ about what he was doing.

EllaBella (girl 7)– Jet went too far.
